AGENDA OVERVIEW

Effectively Recruiting, Engaging, and Retaining Staff

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM, EDT

With turnover rates in long-term care ranging anywhere from 40% to 60% for nurses and aides, and a proposed Biden administration staffing mandate possibly looming, it’s not surprising that staffing is one of the most challenging parts of running a skilled nursing facility.

Take steps to reverse high turnover rates by providing fair compensation, improving job satisfaction, warding off burnout, broadening career paths, and providing training over and above minimum standards. Creating such opportunities can attract, engage, strengthen, and keep valuable workers.

This session will look at ways that nursing facilities can attract and keep good workers—not only to provide quality care, but to manage a possible staffing mandate.

Infection Prevention and Control

11:10 AM 12:10 PM, EDT

The recent letter from the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology to Congress encouraging mandatory infection prevention staff in nursing homes emphasized the “astounding” lack of attention given to infection control in the nation's nursing homes. Multiple government reports also have highlighted the problem.

This session will share ways that nursing homes can maintain key principles of infection control—even with limited staffing—with such strategies as infection control training, patient placement, handwashing encouragement, and more.

Rural Nursing Homes

12:15 PM 1:15, EDT

Rural nursing homes face greater challenges than those in urban or suburban areas, such as a smaller talent pool; maintaining census; access to fewer hospitals from which to get referrals; and providing special care for frailer patients with dementia or multiple chronic health conditions.

Despite the challenges, which includes the recent expiration of the PHE in May, rural administrators are coming up with solutions to attract qualified staff, provide consistent care, increase census, and boost referrals.

This session will explore ways that rural administrators are solving some of their problems by combining services, building better coordination, and getting creative.
