Anesthesiology Supply Demand and Recruiting Trends

Advanced practice professionals such as physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) may be able to absorb some of the duties of anesthesiologists and reduce shortages.

According to Medscape’s 2020 Physician Compensation Report, 17% of anesthesiologists work with PAs in their practices and 31% work with NPs, while 62% work with neither. Because of their role in directly administering procedures, anesthesiologists are less likely to offload duties to PAs and NPs than more consultative/patient management specialties, such as primary care. However, workloads in anesthesia are routinely allocated to certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs).
